The artiste known as Tony D Clutcheye a.k.a Dennis Anthony Lawrence was born in Spanish Town . At an early age Tony discovered a great love for music and, inspired by the likes of Lieutenant Stitchie and Pappa San, decided that the entertainment industry would be his career path. Tony D cut his teeth deejaying on local sound system King Sonic, aspiring to capture the rapid fire delivery of his idols. He would have continued along this path if not for a revelation he experienced after hearing dancehall singer Wayne Wonder on the radio. Toasting dreams were instantly replaced by the need to create melodies, to ride octaves, to traverse the scales, to produce a joyous and moving vibe that would take listeners to another place. With this new purpose in mind, Tony spent a great deal of time studying the vocal styling of various established singers, mimicking at first, then eventually crafting his own unique approach. Tony D the singer made his debut performance on a stage show at Clarendon’s Capri Theatre in 1991. A fellow performer at said show would later become a major influence on the young artiste’s career. The artiste was Kirk “Little Kirk” Davis and he served as a mentor to Tony D, teaching him the ins and outs of the business as well as giving him the opportunity to open shows for the Shocking Vibes Crew. A part of the journey for many Jamaican artistes is the search for a musical home which provides the right atmosphere for maximum creativity and to some extent comfort and camaraderie. Tony D’s journey was no different as he had stints with major labels and producers like Black Scorpio, Bobby Digital, Mikey Bennett’s Grafton Studios, Max Romeo, Creative Sounds, fledgling labels like Kickoff Records, Hotwire as well as sound system related labels Stone Love, Metromedia, France’s Fury Bass and Germany’s Heartical. Tony D achieved his first breakthrough single “Bugging Me” for the

Creative Sounds Label in 2006. The single was accompanied by a music video (his first) which got good rotation on local access channels as well as on the radio. This was followed up in 2007 by the even more successful “Drop Top” on the Kingswell label. This single enjoyed major rotation on Irie FM and other stations. An accompanying music video would have pushed the single into greater rotation, but the unfortunately the producers blundered in not investing in the true hit potential of the song. Still in search of that elusive number 1 hit single, Tony D writes and records at a frenetic pace, juggling projects with various local and overseas producers, still with the dream of creating songs that move not just the waistline but the heart as well. He is currently recording at the Taxi Gang Studio, home of the legendary Sly and Robbie. Who knows, this may be the much sought “musical home” where all the good things yearned for will be manifested.
